Overview
Using an wired connection instead of Wi-Fi provides a more secure, stable and faster network connection, reducing lag and interference from our wireless networks. It’s ideal for activities that require low latency and high bandwidth, such as video conferencing, online exams, gaming, and large file transfers.
All data jacks (Ethernet wall plate ports) are usually off by default.
Eligibility
All faculty, and staff. Students please use the dorm jack activation service.
Instructions
Activating your data jack involves actions by multiple people. Please plan ahead and give us a few days’ notice if you need a data jack activated. Based on our typical workload, we can generally activate a data jack within 2-3 business days after receiving the request, though we often complete it sooner.
You will need to supply the following information to activate a jack:
-
Full Name – Full name of the person that will be using the data jack
-
Phone – Phone number if there are any questions about this request
-
Building
-
Room #
-
Data Jack # and port #
-
Availability – availability for us to have access to room (date/time)
-
Restriction – any special restrictions on when the work can be done
NOTE
In addition to activating the data jack, you will also need to register your device on our network. OIT issued computers should already be registered. Other non-Williams devices will need the Ethernet address registered by OIT staff.
