Secure Assessment Platform - Exam.net (for students)

Body

Williams College is currently piloting Exam.net, a secure digital assessment platform. Exam.net allows instructors to conduct digital exams using students' personal devices while maintaining a secure, distraction-free environment to uphold academic integrity.

If you are a student preparing to take a secure exam using Exam.net, this guide covers the essentials for using the platform during our 1-year pilot.

Students: Taking an Exam

Exam.net allows you to take exams on your personal computer securely.

1. Preparing for Your Exam

Your instructor will tell you if your exam uses a standard browser or "High-Security" mode.

  • Standard Browser: Simply ensure your preferred web browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, etc.) is fully updated.

  • High-Security Mode: You will be prompted to download a specific application. Download the Safe Exam Browser (SEB) for Windows or the Exam.net app for Mac

    • high-security app download prompt

2. Accessing the Exam

  • Go to Exam.net.

  • In the Student Exam Key field, enter the case-sensitive, 6-character Exam Key provided by your instructor.

    • Student Exam Key field highlighted

  • Follow the on-screen prompts to start. If your instructor set a time limit, your work will automatically submit when time expires, so double-check your work!

3. Student Best Practices

  • Save your tabs! When using the high security mode, it force quits all open applications, so proactively save your browser tabs or re-open them after your exam (instructions vary by browser).

  • Power Up: Fully charge your battery before the exam, and bring your power cord to the testing room just in case.

  • Test Runs: Participate in any "demo" exams your instructor offers to iron out technical bugs before test day.

  • Need Help? If your device does not meet the technical requirements, or if you need testing accommodations, proactively reach out to your Class Dean, Student Financial Services, or the Office of Accessible Education.
